TagAudit Research · Storefront Tracking Health
Shopify has announced that script tags stop running on March 1, 2027. We scanned 253 publicly listed, reachable Shopify storefronts to see how much of the tracking installed today still depends on them — and what else is loaded on those pages.
Of the 253 storefronts we could scan, 155 of 252 (61.5%) still load at least one script tag that stops working on March 1, 2027. The problem is not duplicated analytics platforms — those are rare — it is legacy tags: nearly half the stores (118 of 251, 47.0%) load the same script URL two or more times on a single page, and of the 550 retiring tags we catalogued, 189 (34.4%) have no automatic migration path and require manual review. Separately, 20 of 251 stores (8.0%) expose a plaintext token-type marker in their public page source; we publish the count only, never the values.
With roughly sixteen months left before the cutoff, most stores in the sample are still running at least one tag that will silently stop firing.
Duplicate loading is the most common hygiene issue in the sample — the same script fetched and executed repeatedly on the same page.
Stacked duplicate containers are rare. The typical store does not run two analytics stacks — it runs one stack with leftover tags attached.
| Script tags per store | Stores |
|---|---|
| 0 | 97 |
| 1–3 | 95 |
| 4–7 | 46 |
| 8–12 | 13 |
| 13+ | 1 |
Half the sample runs one script tag or none; a tail of 60 stores carries four or more.
| Migration path | Tags | Share |
|---|---|---|
| App Embed | 329 | 59.8% |
| Manual review required | 189 | 34.4% |
| Web Pixel | 28 | 5.1% |
| Checkout | 4 | 0.7% |
About a third of the retiring tags cannot be moved automatically — each one needs a person to decide what replaces it before the deadline.
One in twelve stores exposes a token-type marker in publicly served page source. Token values were never recorded or stored at any point in this study — only a yes/no flag per store.
Sample frame. The frame of 300 stores was assembled from three public sources: Shopify's official examples/showcase listings (42 stores), Shopify Theme Store demo and featured in-use store links (43 demo + 190 featured), and stores self-reported in public Shopify Community topics (20 feedback topics + 5 post-linked). The sample is therefore publicly listed Shopify storefronts that were reachable during the scan week. It is not a random sample of all Shopify merchants, and no figure in this report should be read as describing all Shopify stores.
Scanning. All stores were scanned on November 2, 2026. For each store we fetched three pages — home, one product page, one collection page — and recorded the full set of script tags via our audit API plus a direct fetch of the same pages. Raw page captures are archived for verification. Store-level results are published in anonymized form only.
Attrition, disclosed in full. Of 300 attempted stores, 253 scanned successfully. Pilot batch (100 attempted): 79 scanned, 16 unreachable, 5 not on Shopify. Expansion batch (200 attempted): 174 scanned, 19 not on Shopify, 6 unreachable, 1 password-protected. In addition, 4 community-topic candidate stores failed a pre-scan liveness check and were excluded before the frame was finalized; they appear in no denominator. Denominators vary slightly by metric (251–252) because a small number of scanned stores returned incomplete fields for a given measure; each finding above states its own denominator.
